The recent Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers (CCEM) held in Mauritius provided an opportunity to convene a focus discussion group on gender on 29 August 2012.

Five Mauritian alumni met with Commonwealth Scholarship Commissioners Christine Humfrey and Richard Middleton to consider gender issues facing Commonwealth Scholars before, during, and after their awards.

Questions debated included:

  • Are there any barriers that prevent women from applying for Commonwealth Scholarships?
  • Are there any issues specific to women that make it more difficult to focus on their degree whilst on award?
  • What support do women generally need after the completion of their awards?

The participants also discussed whether a new CSC Gender Network could help support award holders and alumni in this area.
