Mususu Kaonda (2012 Commonwealth Scholar from Zambia, PhD Materials Science, University of Birmingham) spoke to SciDev.Net about how to encourage more young women to begin science and engineering careers.

Mususu was encouraged to follow a career as an engineer by her father. She was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 2008, to study for an MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials at the University of Liverpool. After returning home, she was appointed as the first female lecturer in the University of Zambia’s School of Mines.

This interview was conducted by SciDev.Net as part of a series on Africa’s PhD renaissance.
