Commonwealth alumni gather in Ghana

More than 60 Commonwealth alumni came together in Accra, Ghana, in July 2016 to celebrate the nearly 2,000 Ghanaian citizens who have benefited from a Commonwealth Scholarship since the scheme started in 1959.

75 Ghanaians have been selected to come to the UK on a Commonwealth Scholarship or Fellowship in the 2016-2017 academic year, and a number of these Scholars and Fellows were present at the reception, giving them the chance to meet and network with existing alumni members.

The reception was hosted by Liliana Biglou OBE, Director of the British Council in Ghana. Other guests included HE Jon Benjamin (British High Commissioner to Ghana), Richard Middleton (Chair of the CSC), and Dr John Kirkland (Executive Secretary of the CSC), as well as members of the Council of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, who were in Accra for the ACU Conference of University Leaders 2016.

In addition to speeches from HE Mr Benjamin and Mr Middleton, Jacob Agbenorhevi, President of the Ghana Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association (COSFAG), highlighted the association’s efforts to bring together Commonwealth alumni as a human capacity tool for the socioeconomic development of Ghana.
