The workshop for Commonwealth Master’s Scholars considered the changing channels for communication, the role of the media in connecting with communities, and the ways in which academia is attempting to bridge the gap between universities and society. Through an interactive programme with contributions from organisation involved in engagement and the media, Scholars took part in plenaries, discussion sessions, and group activities.

The workshop aimed to provide an understanding of the modern media and the issues that academia faces in ensuring that knowledge is accessible and understood by business, government and the public. Through plenary sessions, group discussions, activities and presentations, Scholars considered a number of key questions:

  • Why and how should we communicate?
  • Radio and public service broadcasting – reaching local and global audiences
  • News and academia – online academic journalism and reporting
  • International engagement – building connections and community engagement

The culmination of the workshop was a CSC Radio challenge, where Scholars recorded podcasts on an academic subject, tailored to s specific audience group. Our Commonwealth Scholars Radio news story contains more information on the event, as well links to the fantastic podcasts. Photos of the event are also available on Flickr.
